Global Stress Management
The global stress management market hit USD 18,700.9 million in 2020 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 3.8% during the forecast period.
The possible root causes are work-related psychological risks, stress, poor health and business consequences at a high number of workplaces. Increasing globalization and innovations in information and communication technology, new types of contract terms and arrangements for employees have led to increased stress.
These above-mentioned factors posed an impact on workplaces over the last several decades, resulting in new occupational safety and health (OSH) challenges.
The busy lifestyle, which adds to job pressures, deadlines, multitasking, and the need to acquire new skills, has an impact on work-life balance in a broader social context. The demand for businesses and employees to remain competitive is growing in addition to these basic and long-term changes.
Long work hours contributed to 745,000 fatalities, according to research by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO). In 2016, these deaths were brought on by stress from working at least 55 hours per week, which led to ischemic heart disease and stroke. Since 2000, there has been a 29% increase in deaths.
Impact of COVID-19 on Mental Health
Globally, there is a severe mental health crisis because of the coronavirus epidemic. Policies are being adopted by the public and corporate sectors to aid in and alleviate the psychological anguish of those living in a lockdown. In addition to worsening physical health issues, COVID-19 has also had a negative impact on mental health since it has caused stress due to both financial and personal loss because of an increase in COVID-19 patients around the world and a temporary halt in activities.
Healthcare professionals and first responders who labour under constant pressure are particularly sensitive to stress, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the WHO study, stress in 2020 also had an impact on young children who were unable to attend school or go outside because of the lengthy lockdown.
Stress Management Market by Service
Market segments include stress evaluation, resilience training, yoga and meditation, progress tracking metrics, and others based on the services they provide. The stress assessment segment, out of these, has the biggest market share as of 2021 and is anticipated to keep onto that position during the projected period.
New techniques for stress evaluation have been developed because of the rapid growth in technology in recent years, and these techniques are being used to assess stress levels. For instance, the American Institute of Stress and Stress master International collaborated in April 2021 to give the Stress Mastery Questionnaire, a psychometric test with a history of scientific validation (SMQ). This private, online stress test offers thorough stress reports and evaluations on all stress risk scores.
Stress Management by Activity
The market for stress management is split into indoor and outdoor segments based on activity. The outdoor sector, out of these, has the greatest market share as of 2021 and is anticipated to keep onto that position during the projected period.
The expansion of the outdoor market can be due to the growing awareness of the benefits of getting outside to reduce or eliminate stress and anxiety. For instance, new research from a Cornell interdisciplinary team published in January 2020 indicated that as little as 10 minutes spent in a natural setting might boost students' moods.
Stress Management market by End-Use
The market for stress management is segmented into small, medium, and big businesses depending on the size of the firm. The largest segment among these is large-scale organisations, and it is anticipated that it will continue to be the largest segment during the projected period.
The segment's expansion can be due to larger firms becoming more conscious of employees' high levels of stress. Large-scale enterprises benefit from preventive stress management by operating to their utmost potential.
Asia
Different physical and mental signs of stress differ based on the circumstances of each person. Deteriorations in physical health and depression are two examples of them. One of the secrets to a contented and successful life in contemporary society is the process of stress management. While managing the many responsibilities that come with life can be challenging, stress management offers an answer. Slowly but surely, the stigma associated with mental illnesses like stress and anxiety is breaking down. Both the use of drugs and methods for reducing stress have been standardised. Therefore, it is anticipated that the global market for workplace stress management would follow a successful course of development in the years to come. The Medical Fraternity concentrates on creating key components to manage mental health issues.
To stay up with change, organisations examine HR-based targets and organisational objectives on a regular basis for effectiveness, attrition, and levels of customer dissatisfaction, error rates, and health and safety standards at work. These indicators must be in line with programmes for workplace wellness like productivity, turnover, stress levels, and mental health problems. Yoga has long been known to have numerous psychological and physical advantages, and it is becoming more and more popular in the workplace. This mental clutter can be removed through yoga positions and meditation, which will improve the workers' alertness, concentration, and productivity.
Key players:
United Arab Emirates
The conversation surrounding mental health is becoming more vocalised as healthcare professionals work to provide high-quality care across all disciplines during the epidemic to ensure that patients do not suffer in silence. Impact of the Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID-19) Lockdown on Mental Health and Well-Being in the United Arab Emirates, a study that questioned 4,426 participants and was published in Frontiers in Psychiatry, found that over 36% of respondents experienced more stress from job, family, and financial issues. Additionally, 43–63% of the individuals reported feeling anxious or helpless because of COVID-19. Higher Impact of Event Scale (IES-R) scores was more prevalent among females, younger individuals, part-timers, and college or university graduates. The result is a gauge of the post-traumatic stress symptoms that are connected to a particular occurrence.
2015 WHO research, however, highlighted and documented the prevalence of depression and anxiety in the UAE, claiming that it had the highest rate of depression of any nation in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
According to a report released by the Ministry of Health and Prevention - UAE, anxiety and depression are among the top 10 causes of poor health in the country even though there are few comprehensive statistics on mental health (MOHAP). The most prevalent mental health conditions among individuals, they can also be side effects of conditions like borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder. ADHD, mood disorders, or substance use disorders are frequently co-diagnosed with personality problems. However, a lot of patients receive incorrect diagnoses from medical professionals who are not qualified in providing mental diagnoses as well as from locals who self-diagnose and self-medicate based on what they read on WebMD. The process of making a mental diagnosis and the risks associated with making a mistaken diagnosis needs to be made more widely known. The most common misdiagnoses include ADHD, depression, bipolar I and II, and personality disorders.
Although progress has been achieved in addressing people's well-being through promoting mental health, research shows that patients are discouraged from seeking psychological care in the UAE due to the burden of societal stigma. To combat this, MOHAP introduced Hayat (life), a programme for pandemic-related mental health care. Additionally, the National Program for Happiness and Wellbeing opened a special telephone counselling hotline to assist people who are experiencing anxiety or psychiatric problems.
Virtual HealthCare:
An increasingly popular forum for consultations is virtual healthcare. Because they can't locate a good therapist in their location, many patients choose to receive online support from therapists in other nations. Following their participation in the virtual treatment process during COVID-19, participants are discovering the advantages of in-person counselling. Virtual healthcare has advantages and is effective for a particular range of therapies and patients. It has enabled people to keep in touch with their rehabilitation process from anywhere in the world and has greatly aided many people in coping with COVID-19 confinement.
The number of patients in the UAE seeking help for mental health problems increased at least six-fold in three years, World Health Organisation figures show.
Admissions for inpatient and outpatient mental health services soared between 2017 and 2020. There were 12.09 inpatient admissions for mental health problems for every 100,000 of the population in the UAE in 2017. This rose to 71.65 for every 100,000 in 2020. The coronavirus pandemic worsened many people’s mental health as they dealt with financial and relationship concerns.
Mental health problems range from stress and anxiety to addiction and psychosis. The possible reasons mentioned are bullying on social media and pressure from family and work. Individuals subjected to trauma in the past have issues with their emotions and are prone to become impulsive.
In 2017, the UAE approved a national mental health promotion strategy. The goals included raising awareness of mental health issues and supporting programmes like home-based treatment and community outreach.
The expectations on many of the UAE's workers have increased as the country has grown busier and more competitive. Therefore, it is not unexpected that levels of tension, worry, and depression have also increased. In 2017, there were 454.49 outpatient visits per 100,000 people. In 2020, this increased to 2,975.6 visits per 100,000 people.
Early detection of mental health issues is the key to dealing with them successfully. A critical first step is realising, admitting, and accepting that one could have a problem.
Talking to a friend or family member about issues, spending less time on social media, getting regular exercise, getting enough sleep, and acknowledging that having strong emotions is a normal aspect of being human are all methods that can help people maintain excellent mental health.
Dubai
According to the results of new research, depression was the most common mental health disorder among young people using psychiatric services in Dubai. Specialists from Zayed University, Al Jalila Children’s Hospital and Rashid Hospital conducted professional help sessions, nearly half of those who attended were under 20 and their average age was 15.
In a rare UAE-focused study on the subject, researchers concentrated on young people's understanding of mental health services.
Of the 99 patients whose records were examined, 47% were Emirati, 22% were from other Middle Eastern nations, 13% were from other parts of Asia, 10% were from Africa, and the other patients were from Europe, America, or Australia.
Demographic data, stressors from daily life, the length of symptoms, the primary diagnosis, and the presence or absence of psychotic characteristics were all obtained.
Delusions, incorrect beliefs and perceptions, and hallucinations, or seeing and hearing things that are not real, are some of the symptoms of psychosis.
The most frequent diagnosis in the sample examined was a depressive illness, which was followed by bipolar disorder and associated disorders, and anxiety. Other types of psychosis including schizophrenia, a dangerous illness in which reality is perceived strangely, were also observed in the individuals. Peer connection is crucial, and young people struggle when they are unable to engage in it while the pandemic was ongoing.
Younger folks typically recover more quickly than older adults and take less time to get over their mental health obstacles. They typically carry less emotional baggage, and their optimism and hope haven't been too severely dented by setbacks.
Other-nationality young people were more likely to identify friendship interactions as a cause of stress. Young women were more likely to seek family members' advice, discuss difficult relationships, and be given a depression diagnosis. The study discovered that non-Emirati teens were more inclined to communicate difficulties with friends and that people with poor family relationships were more likely to seek professional care. According to the study, young males need more education on early warning signs of poor mental health and how to get help. Researchers found that in the reports they examined, the onset of psychotic symptoms prompted quicker medical interventions, whereas the presence of self-harming behaviour or worry made people put off seeking treatment.
